Diesel Technician

Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

The Diesel Technician will be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a variety of diesel engines and components for our fleet of trucks and other vehicles. Diesel Technicians will be expected to have a strong knowledge and understanding of diesel engine systems and components. You will need to have excellent customer service skills as you will be client facing and working on their vehicles. As with all positions within dealerships, Technicians are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines and other related components
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose engine performance issues
  • Replace and repair worn parts and components including pistons, rings, bearings, seals, and valves
  • Perform preventative maintenance and tune-ups on diesel engines
  • Use special tools such as timing lights, compression testers, and scan tools to diagnose and repair engines
  • Repair and adjust fuel injectors, fuel lines, and fuel pumps
  • Inspect and test vehicle electrical and electronic systems
  • Rebuild engines and other components as necessary
  • Install and adjust engine components and systems
  • Maintain records of maintenance and repair work performed
  • Monitor and adjust engine performance parameters such as fuel pressure, air-fuel ratios, and timing
  • Perform diagnostic tests to identify and diagnose engine malfunctions
  • Use computerized diagnostic equipment to diagnose and repair engine-related problems
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed

 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working on diesel engines
  • Valid Driver’s license and safe driving record; required to have California within 30 days
  • Ability to regularly lift 30 pounds; occasionally lifting lift up to 50 pounds
  • Technicians must keep abreast of the federal, state and local regulations that affect their operations, and must also comply with these regulations as well as hazardous waste disposal and OSHA policies
  • Ability to perform all essential functions of the job description

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in the eight automotive specialty areas (engine repair, engine performance, heating and air conditioning, electrical systems, automatic transmissions, manual transmission and axle, brakes and front end)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and schematics
  • Must have knowledge of hydraulics and electronic systems
  • Must possess basic math skills
  • Must have strong mechanical aptitude
  • Must be able to use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair systems
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Regularly stands, walks, sits; uses hands; reaches with hands and arms; talks and hears. Occasionally climbs or balances; bend, stretch, stoops, kneels, crouches, squats or crawls to perform repairs and inspections; must lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces
  • Good vision to inspect repair work
  • Must be willing to work long hours and weekends when needed

 

Environment/Noise: 

  • Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions
